Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What does 'nighttime shutoff' or 'light sensor' mean?

Most cuckoo clocks (either mechanical or battery powered) come with 'nighttime shutoff' in either a manual or 'light sensor' variety. This just means that both varieties enable you to control when the clock makes sounds.

Mechanical cuckoo clocks have a manual 'nighttime shutoff' which are usually a lever with 2 positions - sound on or sound off.

Battery powered cuckoo clocks usually come with an automatic 'nighttime shutoff' otherwise known as a light sensor which detects light levels and disables sound when the lights are off or it is very dark. While some include volume levels as well as sound on/off positions, some models also include an option to stop the sound between the hours of 9:00pm and 8:00am.

'Mr. Orange' Cuckoo Clock (Hammered gold) by Progetti

The shape of 'Mr. Orange', a modern cuckoo clock by Progetti, is the reduction of the traditional chalet cuckoo clock which itself is a reduction of the simple iconic image of the country-side cottage.

Here, however, the lines are clean, simple, and the structure is reduced to it's essence - crafted in a walnut frame and yet beautifully adorned in glorious hammered gold, while the pendulum, cuckoo hole and hour hand are coloured with a dash of orange. 'Mr. Orange', designed by legendary Italian designer Alberto Sala is a symbol of the contemporary cuckoo clock. It features a solid walnut frame which borders each side, filled with hammered gold. The 'Mr. Orange' model cuckoo clock comes in five different colours/textures - ranging from this classic hammered gold, to a dark wenge brown wood, to a tartan beige & blue, to a striped beige & blue and finally to a jazzy black & white polka-dot - find one today that will match the style of your home!

The battery powered movement has a photosensitive sensor that automatically turns off the cuckoo sound in the absence of light so that no one is ever woken by the chime. It also has a switch to regulate the volume of the cuckoo sound or to switch it off completely.

All Progetti cuckoo clocks are fitted with an Engstler™ clock & cuckoo mechanism which is custom built by the Engstler cuckoo clock manufacturer in the Black Forest region, Germany. Their craftsmanship ensures your cuckoo clock works as wonderfully as the world-famous traditional cuckoo clocks of the Black Forest region.
