Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What does 'night-time shutoff' or 'light sensor' mean?

Most cuckoo clocks (either mechanical or battery powered) come with 'night-time shutoff' in either a manual or 'light sensor' variety. This just means that both varieties enable you to control when the clock makes sounds.

Mechanical cuckoo clocks have a manual 'night-time shutoff' which are usually a lever with 2 positions - sound on or sound off.

Battery powered cuckoo clocks usually come with an automatic 'night-time shutoff' otherwise known as a light sensor which detects light levels and disables sound when the lights are off or it is very dark. While some include volume levels as well as sound on/off positions, some models also include an option to stop the sound between the hours of 9:00pm and 8:00am.

This beautiful chalet 8-day movement traditional musical cuckoo clock is crafted by renowned Black Forest cuckoo clock manufacturer 'Hönes'.

Design

Made from wood sourced locally from the Black Forest, Germany, this traditional musical chalet cuckoo clock is beautifully hand-crafted, with it's roof made of individually hand-crafted shingles and a facade decorated with various hand-painted elements such as small shuttered windows with curtains, hand-painted flower baskets and a moving mill-wheel.

At the front of the Black Forest chalet is a charming scene of a woman dressed in traditional Black Forest attire, who animates on the hour and pulls on a string to ring the bell in the belfry bell-tower. The mill-wheel also moves during the melody.

Above this scene, on a balcony at the front of the house, a carousel of small hand-painted village dancers rotate and twirl along with the alternating melodies - either songs "The Happy Wanderer" or "Edelweiss".

Stained in a walnut finish, this 8-day movement musical chalet cuckoo clock is perfect for adding some rustic charm to any living room, hallway or study.

Cuckoo Chime

This clock features a charming little cuckoo bird which animates from behind it's little door and sings in the hour (a succession of cuckoo calls to correspond to the hour in the day). The sound can be turned off manually at night with a 'sound-off' lever.

Music

The cuckoo clock plays it's melodies through a mechanical Swiss-made music box that alternates between the songs "The Happy Wanderer" or "Edelweiss".  The sound can be switched off at night with a manual lever.

This clock features:

    • Moving cuckoo bird which moves out from behind it's door and chimes with it’s ’cuckoo' sound on the hour.
    • Moving balcony dancers who animate by twirling and rotating through the two arched doorways when the melodies play.
    • Moving bell-ringer Black Forest woman.
    • Moving mill-wheel.
    • Moving pendulum that sways side-to-side.
    • Manual night-time sound shut-off lever.
    • 8-day movement (which means it needs to be wound manually every eight days).
    • A mechanical 'REGULA' movement which is made out of brass, manufacturered by the market-leader 'SBS-FEINTECHNIK' in the Black Forest/Germany.
    • Equipped with a Swiss-made 'REUGE' music box which alternates between playing two different melodies upon the hour - "The Happy Wanderer" or "Edelweiss".
    • Solid cast-iron 'pine-cone-shaped' weights.

    8-day Movement

This cuckoo clock has 8-day movement meaning approximately every eight days the clock needs to be manually wound. The act of winding the cuckoo clock is very easy and only requires someone to gently pull on the chains so that the weights are drawn back to their utmost position. Gravity does the rest and ensures the clock can be kept perfectly on time as the weight lowers and slowly pulls the chain back through the clock-work mechanism.
