Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What does 'night-time shutoff' or 'light sensor' mean?

Most cuckoo clocks (either mechanical or battery powered) come with 'night-time shutoff' in either a manual or 'light sensor' variety. This just means that both varieties enable you to control when the clock makes sounds.

Mechanical cuckoo clocks have a manual 'night-time shutoff' which are usually a lever with 2 positions - sound on or sound off.

Battery powered cuckoo clocks usually come with an automatic 'night-time shutoff' otherwise known as a light sensor which detects light levels and disables sound when the lights are off or it is very dark. While some include volume levels as well as sound on/off positions, some models also include an option to stop the sound between the hours of 9:00pm and 8:00am.

'Moontime' Cuckoo Clock (Black) by Progetti

The idea for the creation of this clock began while listening to the classical music piece 'Clair de Lune' by Debussy. This fascinating melody coupled with the image of moonlight inspired designers Bellavista & Piccini to create the 'Moontime' Cuckoo Clock for Italian design leaders Progetti.

Much like the melody, you are privy to a seemingly poignant moment veiled in soft serenity, as a relaxed cat observes a daring canary and awaits the time when it will exit its cage. This modern chalet-styled wall cuckoo clock captures the poetry of this magic moment with the subdued lighting and the ambient peace and quiet of a ‘midsummer’s night’. Made of fine quality wood and painted in non-toxic black and white paint, this artwork has a very simple design which is quite childish yet elegant, recalling a type of vintage style. The moon is depicted very simply as if seen through a small round window where the cat is perched and where the hands of the clock are placed. Situated below the window is the open cage where the cuckoo mechanism is positioned and on the hour the canary pops out to defy the cat. The base, has a linear motif and a vase with a plant, from which the thin black pendulum hangs.

The battery powered movement has a photosensitive sensor that automatically turns off the cuckoo sound in the absence of light. It also has a switch to regulate the volume of the cuckoo sound or to switch it off completely.

All Progetti cuckoo clocks are fitted with an Engstler™ clock & cuckoo mechanism which is custom built by the Engstler cuckoo clock manufacturer in the Black Forest region, Germany. Their craftsmanship ensures your cuckoo clock works as wonderfully as the world-famous traditional cuckoo clocks of the Black Forest region.

MEET THE DESIGNER OF THE ''MOONTIME” CUCKOO CLOCK BY PROGETTI: BELLAVISTA & PICCINI

In the city of Meda, the cradle of design, the atelier Bellavista & Piccini Architetti was born. Giancarlo Bellavista studied at Naples' Federico II with Riccardo Dalisi, while Matteo Piccini studied at Milan's Politecnico with Pierluigi Cerri. An heterogeneous mix of precision and eclecticism they look at design like the confluence of different disciplines - from art to literature. Brought together by the pleasure of continuous comparison, they work hard to exceed the individualities in a permanent dialog. In their atelier, they test is the use of alternative raw materials for the creation of new products' prototypes. The studio deals with architecture and design, working together with some firms of Brianza for the development of furniture's projects.
