Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What does 'night-time shutoff' or 'light sensor' mean?

Most cuckoo clocks (either mechanical or battery powered) come with 'night-time shutoff' in either a manual or 'light sensor' variety. This just means that both varieties enable you to control when the clock makes sounds.

Mechanical cuckoo clocks have a manual 'night-time shutoff' which are usually a lever with 2 positions - sound on or sound off.

Battery powered cuckoo clocks usually come with an automatic 'night-time shutoff' otherwise known as a light sensor which detects light levels and disables sound when the lights are off or it is very dark. While some include volume levels as well as sound on/off positions, some models also include an option to stop the sound between the hours of 9:00pm and 8:00am.

In the west-central part of Switzerland in the canton of Bern is a valley known as the Emmental, a dreamy, hilly landscape dotted with wooden bridges, cheese dairies, castles and idyllic farms. Our ‘Edelweiss Chalet’ clock pays tribute to this beloved region with its finely crafted rendering of a typical Emmental-style chalet. The region is also famous for its woodcarving craftsmen, two of whom you’ll find represented here on either side of the chalet’s edifice. A proud ibex, with its majestic, backward-curling horns stands off to the left side of the scene while a classic Emmental fountain well graces the right side.

An arrangement of the widely admired Swiss Edelweiss flower, hand-carved from the wood of linden trees, graces the bottom-center portion of the chalet beneath the clock.

Product Details:

Mechanical Movement:

This quartz model is powered by two ‘C’ batteries. The chalet and figurines, hand-carved from locally sourced wood, are made with the same loving care and devotion to detail as our mechanical clocks. There are only two diffferences between the quartz and mechanical clocks. With the quartz there is no need for winding, and secondly, the quartz clock’s cuckoo sound is a high-quality recording. The weights are for aesthetic purposes and are made of solid iron.

Ornaments:

The ornaments are hand-carved and hand-painted, which makes each one of them original and unique.

Night feature:

This clock features a manual switch that allows you to turn off the cuckoo without affecting the clock’s movement.
